Paleo Avocado-Berry Smoothie Recipe | Eat This Not That
Adding avocado to a smoothie, especially a paleo smoothie, is the move on many levels. It will blend well with any milk you use, creating a silky and creamy blank canvas for other flavors in your smoothie, such as fruits and berries. Not to mention, Avocado is a major component of the Paleo diet due to its high healthy fat content and nutrient density, and it produces a longer lasting energy for our body. Plus, it's very low in carbohydrates and it's also sugar, sodium and cholesterol free. This is the kind of nutritional jackpot that only animal products like grass fed meats, dairy and eggs can match. Therefore, it is not surprising that avocado is also a coveted ingredient for vegans. Come on, is there something avocado can not do?
Since avocado is a berry from a technical point of view, it fits exactly into this berry smoothie. Berries have a good reputation in the fruit category because they are one of the few fruits we have not genetically altered to become bigger and sweeter over the years. They actually have a much lower sugar content than other fruits and fall on the low carbohydrate side of the fruit scales. You can also substitute it for another favorite fruit mix, such as mango, peach, strawberry or pineapple, especially if you want a sweeter smoothie that does not contain sweeteners.
But do not skip the chia seeds: they are a superfood in their own right. They are a powerful source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids and a steady source of energy that will energize you until lunch without raising your blood sugar levels. They also add to the texture of your smoothie as they blend smoothly and gel with the liquid, making your smoothie super thick and luxurious.
